Did You Know…COS holds special “Prism” Sunday worship services?

Did you know that several times a year, Church of the Servant holds Prism Sundays—a combined worship service where members from our Tree of Life and All Nations worshipping bodies come together to worship as one? These services are a beautiful expression of our unity in Christ, and they play a key role in fostering fellowship within our church community.

A Little History About Combined Worship Services

Our tradition of holding combined worship services started back when the Basic English Service (now the All Nations Worship Service) began. From the beginning, we recognized the importance of bringing together our different worshipping communities. These services are an intentional way to live out our values of unity, fellowship, and community.

In continuing this practice, we honor the commitment to fellowship that is central to the body of Christ. Adding more to the theme of fellowship, Prism Sundays often conclude with an all-church meal, giving us the chance to break bread together and deepen our connections.

Why Is It Called “Prism”?

In the past, these services were simply called “combined” or “joint” services, but we wanted a name that better captured the deeper values behind these gatherings. That’s when we settled on the name “Prism.”

The term “prism” was inspired by our former mission statement:

“We are a diverse community of Christ’s Servants, a home for God’s Children, and a prism for God’s light in liturgy and life.”

Just as a prism refracts light to reveal the full spectrum of colors, our Prism Sundays highlight the beauty of our diverse church community coming together. The different colors of the light spectrum remind us of the various cultures and backgrounds represented within our congregation, all united by Christ’s love. These services are an opportunity to celebrate the beauty of that diversity while also coming together as one in worship.

What Makes Prism Sundays Unique?

Prism Sundays are unique because they intentionally blend the practices and traditions of both the Tree of Life and All Nations services. Prism Sundays seek to honor the distinct expressions of faith within our community while reminding us of the unity we share in Christ.

This year, with our ministry theme of Fellowship, Prism Sundays are particularly meaningful. As we gather to worship together, these Sundays serve as a tangible expression of our theme and a chance to grow deeper in fellowship with one another. Whether through worship or sharing a meal, Prism Sundays invite us to experience the beauty of unity in diversity.
