One of the unique things about Church of the Servant is the large number of talented people who contribute to worship on any given Sunday. There are enough pastors, composers and artists in the church that there is always something interesting going on. This Sunday, for example, we had two world premieres of congregational songs. The first was a song written by AnnaMae Bush in honor of Jessica Bratt’s ordination and departure called “As You Took Bread.” It’s a lovely song that skillfully weaves themes of communion and service together. The second was my setting of Psalm 114 which you can read about at my blog.
Another highlight for me was the reading of 1 Peter 5:6-14 at the second service. Eugene Rubingh gave a short and informative introduction, spoke the scripture with clarity and energy, and had the passage mostly memorized. Reading scripture well is not easy; this is a good example for those who take public scripture reading seriously.
