Another important faith milestone celebrated at Church of the Servant is affirmation of baptism. For those not baptized as infants, their time of baptism also includes an affirmation of their baptism. It is our custom to give each person affirming their baptism a sterling silver pendant, designed and created by long-time COS member Helen Bonzelaar commemorating this milestone.
The two-sided pendant displays both the cross as the trunk of a flaming bush on one side, and the John 15 image of the vine and branches on the other. The flaming trunk suggests God’s brilliant, burning love as demonstrated on the cross. It is also reminiscent of Moses’s encounter with God at the burning bush and reminds us that just as Moses was sent by God, we too are sent to love and serve the Lord with all our heart, mind, and strength. Affirmation of baptism is our response to that call before the congregation of Jesus Christ.
In the image of the vine and branches we remember that we belong to Christ and the Christian community so that we may bear fruit for the kingdom. Indeed, Christ says, “you did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another” (John 15:16-17).
This milestone moment celebrates our baptismal identity, the faithfulness of God’s grace, and our oneness with each other.[1]. We thank God for Helen Bonzelaar, for the beautiful pendant offered to those affirming their baptism today, and pray that it will be a continual reminder of our identity and calling in Christ.
